Winnett Food Forest has a mission to provide food and education through small scale permaculture-informed land stewardship
What are we doing - and Why?
Food Security
Winnett Food Forest is looking to demonstrate resilience and build community one lot at a time. We will begin by planting a food forest and raised beds on a single vacant lot in the Newhall section of Whitneyville in Hamden, donating the produce to local soup kitchens. As the fruiting trees and shrubs begin to produce shade, the project will become less reliant on raised beds, shifting instead to fruit, nuts, and perennial local vegetables.
Replication, not Scale
WFF believes that by demonstrating and demystifying these concepts, others will be encouraged to try these practices in their own green spaces. We would be delighted to see Hamden set itself on the map by hosting a record number of similar gardens on both municipal and private land!
Community
WFF will serve as an educational and community resource, hosting workshops and volunteer days to help spread the word about our efforts. We are in conversation with community leaders to ensure we serve the needs of our home community.
Education
Our goal is to help bring awareness and education to our food crisis, offering small scale solutions through helping people start their own sustainable, low labor gardens and food forests.
Access to Abundance
We believe that abundance is possible for all, but that access to the natural abundance is kept behind the locked doors of privilege and power. We hope to unlock some of that abundance through helping people have easy access to high quality, locally grown food.
